What the 2026 EMT exam emphasizes

The updated EMT certification examination is organized around what you do with a patient rather than the older airway/cardiology/trauma buckets. Primary Assessment is the largest domain at 39–43% of the exam, followed by Patient Treatment and Transport at 20–24%.

How to review a missed EMT question

  1. Name the threat: What can kill or seriously harm this patient first?
  2. Name the clue: Which finding in the stem changed the priority?
  3. Name the next action: What should an EMT do now, not eventually?
  4. Check local scope: Medication assistance, procedures, and destination rules can vary by system.

Sample EMT practice questions

A patient with suspected ACS has SpO₂ 97% on room air and no respiratory distress. Is routine oxygen automatically indicated?

No. Current guidance does not recommend routine oxygen for suspected ACS when the patient is not hypoxemic. Assess, monitor, give aspirin when indicated and permitted, and transport according to protocol.

An opioid-overdose patient has a pulse but is breathing 6 times per minute. What comes first?

Support airway and ventilation. Naloxone is important, but inadequate ventilation is the immediate physiologic threat.

Why are there so many primary-assessment questions?

Because Primary Assessment is the largest content domain on the current EMT certification examination.
